MIGRATION NOTES

If you have delveloped larger pieces of code using the Matpack Library you may encounter the problem that your program doesn't compile after you have upgraded to a newer Matpack library version. The following hints will help you to fix your code to match the interfaces to the new and improved library routines.

For a complete journal of the details of all changes have a look at matpack/develop/History.doc. The major improvements are given below.

Migration from 1.8.1 to 1.9.0 (Aug 2006)

Improvements:
- Port to Intel ICC 9.1 C++ compiler for Linux: fixed lots of warnings
- Port to GNU gcc 4.1 C++ compiler: fixed some incompatibilites
- Port to Microsoft Visual C++.NET 7.0. Project files for Visual C++.NET 7.0 can be found in the subdirectory msvc7. (The project files for Microsoft Visual C++ 6.0 SP5 moved to msvc6. However, this port is no longer maintained, and will probably be removed in a future release).
- Port to MinGW compiler (Windows).
- Desktop starter icons for the Gnome (version2) desktop can be generated by 'make gnome2inst'
- Strongly improved class MpGetopt. It can now be used to print complex usage decriptions for the command line.
- Added Matrix::Resize(), ComplexMatrix::Resize(), IntMatrix::Resize() methods for matrix shape modifications with optional padding value.
- Added optional padding value for vector shape modifications: Vector::Resize(), ComplexVector::Resize(), IntVector::Resize()
- Added stream input operator for class MpBitArray. Note, that class BitArray has been renamed to class MpBitArray, following the Matpack naming convention.
- Restructure and strongly enhanced the functionality of the Boolean function class. Replaced class MpBoolFcn by
  - template <class T, class V> class MpBinaryTree - generic binary tree template
  - class MpBoolTree - Boolean expression parse trees
  - class MpBool - Boolean expression parser and manipulation
  - class MpANF - Algebraic Normal Form (ANF) class for Boolean functions
  - class MpAnalyzeFWHT - analysis of Boolean functions, e.g. correlation immunity
- Added new tool tools/Crypto/nlfsrcomp.cpp for linear complexity calculation of nonlinear feedback shift register sequences.
- Added new tool tools/Crypto/anabool.cpp for the analysis of the cryptographic properties of Boolean functions.
Bug fixes:
- The interactive Xmatrix data viewer showed wrong colors for 3D surface plots of complex-valued arrays. Now the phase is mapped correctly to the colormap.
- The Vector::Resize() method could lead to segmentation violations for some corner cases. The identical problem occured for classes ComplexVector and IntVector - fixed now.

Migration from 1.8.0 to 1.8.1 (Nov 2005)

Improvements:
- New class MpBinaryBerlekampMassey: Calculate linear complexity and characterisic polynomial of a binary sequence. The class contains a snapshot save and restore feature to support extremely long calculations.
- New Gray code generation functions (to and from integer values).
- New class MpCRC: A general and very fast CRC encoder class for any CRC generator polynomial upto degree 32 (table based and bit-sequential algorithms are supported).
- Optimized CRC generation functions for CRC 32 (IEEE 802.3, AUTODIN II), CRC-16 (XMODEM), and CRC-16 (X.25-CCITT)
- Class MpColorScalePanel has now an interactive color gradient editor.
- Minor changes for portability upto GNU C++ compiler version 4.0.1.
Bug fixes:
- Fixed bug in shared library creation in GPL release (multiple instances of functions).

Migration from 1.7.4 to 1.8.0 (18 June 2005)

Improvements:
- Introduced the namespace MATPACK. It is now necessary to use the "using" statement after the header include, e.g.
  #include "matpack.h" using namespace MATPACK;
- New class MpBoolFcn: cryptanalysis toolbox for Boolean functions: algebraic normal form parsing, printing, calculation from truth table, Walsh-Hadamard transform, nonlinearity, propagation criterion, correlation immunity analysis.
- Games-Chan algorithm for fast calculation of linear complexity of binary sequences of period 2ⁿ.
- Improved GUI class MpButton and class MpLabel (icon handling, alignment)
- Xmatrix viewer can now change stacking order of graphs. Graphs can now be moved interactively by click-and-move.
- Minor changes for portability upto GNU g++ version 3.4.3
Bug fixes:
- Fixed memory leak in class MpNumex.
- Fixed sporadic crashes of the data visualization tool xmatrix when reloading a visualization projects.

Migration from 1.7.3 to 1.7.4 (Sept, 2004)

Improvements:
- Port to Microsoft Visual C++ 6.0 (service pack 5). The subdirectory win_matpack contains a README file about the build.
- Improved online documentation.
- A new section Cryptography containing
  - MpBerlekampMassey(), the Berlekamp-Massey algorithm for binary sequences
  - MpBerlekampMasseyPacked(), a memory efficient version of the Berlekamp-Massey algorithm
  - class MpBinaryDawg for calculating the maximum order complexity (profile) of binary sequences
  - class MpFWHT for calculating the Walsh-Hadamard transformation
- Added round LED style option for class MpToggleButton (check boxes)
- MpWindow GUI: improved font search
- Data Visualization tool Xmatrix (class MpView) with improved GUI
- Compiles with latest gcc version 3.3.1
Bug fixes:
- Data Visualization tool Xmatrix (class MpView): tiled backgrounds in Postscript export should work now
- Data Visualization tool Xmatrix (class MpView): optional bounding box and axis drawing of general scenes. In your saved visualizations (.xmv files) you possibly have to switch off bounding boxes and axes for scenes if these shouldn't be drawn.
- increased portability: replaced obsolete system functions econvert(), gconvert(), ecvt(), gcvt(), ftime()
- MpPearsonCorrCoeff(): fixed segmentation error for 0-pointer "prob" argument.

Migration from 1.7.2 to 1.7.3 (19 Oct 2003)

Bug fixes:
- Some fixes for incompatibilities with new gcc 3.2 and 3.3 versions and corresponding STL version (unlink,min,max,insert)
Improvements:
- class MpGetopt: constructors and destructors ar public now. Hence the class can be used now without inheriting it.
- Matpack is ported to MS Windows based on the CYGWIN environment. See installation guide.

The directory matpack/archive containing algorithms from various sources (Fnlib, fn, Amos, Specfun, Splib, Toms, ...) which have been modified and adapted to the Matpack Library is no longer added to the distribution.

Migration from 1.7.0 to 1.7.1 (4 Oct 2002)

A general purpose vector sort routine MpArraySort() for multi-dimensional array sorting has been added.
Increased code compliance with standard C++. The library can now be compiled with gcc version 3.1. The previous version showed several syntactical errors with GNU gcc versions greater or equal than 2.95.3. See matpack/develop/History.doc for details. Note: If you want to compile Matpack 1.7.1 with a gcc as old as 2.95.2 you will have to patch the code, e.g. to replace the standard C++ include <sstream> by the deprecated <strstream.h> and "istringstream is(strng);" by "istrstream is(strng.c_str());"
Matpack can now be installed as a shared library: Login as root and unpack the library as /opt/matpack. Call make install. This will create the shared library libmatpack.so.1.7.1 and move it /usr/lib. Also the links libmatpack.so.1 and libmatpack.so are set. To compile and link all tools and demos versus the shared library you just have to replace the line
LINKLIBS= ${MATLIB} ${BLASLIB} -L/usr/X11/lib -lXpm -lX11 -lm
in file Makefile.common by
LINKLIBS= ${BLASLIB} -L/usr/X11/lib -lXpm -lX11 -lmatpack -lm

Migration from 1.6.2 to 1.7.0 (26 Apr 2002)

Significantly improved xmatrix data visualization tool. Saving and restoring of complex visualizations is now possible. Added slice plots and spherical projection plots. Unlimited number of graphs and annotations.
Improved and extended graphical user interface classes (MpWindow).
Library contains now slice plot routines for 3-dimensional fields.
Edge line stride options for surface drawing routines.
General context save/restore class (MpContextSave).
Fixed several C++ compatibility bugs with different Linux distributions. Bug reports of Rudi Gaspard, William Gacquer, and Sam Halliday are acknowledged.
Distribution is tested on S.u.S.E Linux 7.2 (gcc 2.95.3) and Sun Ultra, Solaris 2.5.1 (gcc 2.95.2).

Migration from 1.6.1 to 1.6.2 (24 Jun 2001)

Bug fix: Forward and backward transforms of real valued FHT-FFT routines realfft(int n, double* real), realifft(int n,double* real) in source/FFT/fhtfft.cpp where swapped. Added online documentation. Thanks to Dr. Dirk Lellinger for the bug report.

G++ 2.95.2 compliance: migration from 2.91.66 to 2.95.2 with stricter conformance to the C++ standard required several changes.

Migration from 1.4.0 to 1.4.1 (6 Mar 1999)

The Matpack library template classes should now correctly work with the EGCS 1.1.1, G++ 2.8.1, and the older G++ 2.7.2.3 compiler. The prefered compiler is definitely EGCS 1.1.1.
A stable STL template library is required for compilation. That means, that compiler versions before GCC 2.7.2.3 probably will not work.
The defines for the boolean values True, False have been removed. Instead you should switch to the values true, false of the the standard C++ type bool in all your programs.
The template functions median(), swap(), and ForceRange() have been renamed to MpMedian(), MpSwap(), and MpForceRange(), respectively, to avoid name clashes with standard includes (e.g. from the STL)
For efficiency reasons mprandom.h is no longer included automatically by matpack.h. Include it explicitely, if you use random distributions.
A new interpolation class system has been introduced. It replaces the old functions for Fritsch-Carlson interpolation, cubic splines, cross-validated cubic splines, Bezier splines, cardinal splines, rational interpolation, and regression curve drawing. All interpolation classes are derived now from class MpCurveBase. Take a look at the demo programs

Several data member of X Window API classes have been modified or renamed. The functionality of the API has been enhanced. Look into the new class include files if you have problems when compiling a program that worked with a previous version.
You can find a detailed history of all changes in matpack/develop/History.doc.
Several bugs (mostly in the MpWindow API) that caused segmentation violations on DEC Alpha machines (OSF 4, g++ 2.8.1) have been fixed.
A new class MpNotebook has been added to the X Window API.
class MpImage has been upgraded to use the new versions zlib 1.1.3 and libpng 1.0.2 for the PNG image format.
